Fritz Hansen uses a satin aluminium four-star base with a specific blade profile and a cast stem. Copies use a thinner, brighter star, sharper edges, and a stem that wobbles in the shell.

Look for a Fritz Hansen label or stamp under the shell or on the base, with a date code, and often a Republic of Fritz Hansen mark on newer chairs. Absent marks on a chair sold as authentic must be explained.

upholstery turn
The fabric or leather is turned around the shell edge in one piece with a single hidden seam at the back and no gathering at the curve. Copies show a piped edge, staples, or visible puckering on the tightest radius.

shell profile
The original wing profile narrows at the neck and the back curve is asymmetric top to bottom. Copies fatten the wings and round the neck, which reads immediately in profile.

tilt mechanism
Authorised chairs tilt smoothly with an adjustable mechanism and no clunk. A rigid or clicking swivel is a copy or a failed mechanism.
