Barcelona chair MR90: real or reproduction
A genuine one typically changes hands at €3,200, and a good reproduction sells for €450 to €1,100. That gap is why you turn the piece over before you pay.
Below is the whole checklist we run on this model, 6 markers, written so you could run it by hand. Send your photos and we read the most decisive one free.
The markers that decide it
- 01
frame join
Knoll frames are one continuous stainless piece, hand-ground and polished, with no visible weld or seam at the cross. A copy shows a filled weld line, a plated finish that flakes, or a joint you can feel with a fingernail.
- 02
engraved signature
Authorised chairs carry the Knoll logo and the Mies van der Rohe signature engraved into the frame, usually on the inside of a leg. Engraving is crisp and slightly V-cut. Laser-etched, printed, or absent marking is a flag; note that the mark's position moved over the decades.
- 03
cushion panels
Forty leather panels on the seat and back of a Knoll chair, hand-welted, each panel cut from a single hide with matching grain. Copies commonly use fewer, larger panels and bonded leather.
- 04
straps
Original cushions sit on leather belts fixed to the frame, with even spacing and a saddle-stitched end. Elastic webbing, staples, or nylon straps are reproduction.
- 05
buttons and welt
Buttons are leather-covered and pulled taut into the panel intersection; the welt is a piped seam, not a topstitch. Plastic buttons or a flat topstitched edge are copies.
- 06
weight and stance
A genuine chair is heavy and the legs flex slightly under load without creaking. Copies are markedly lighter, and the frame often rings when tapped.
This is an evidenced opinion read from photographs, never a certificate. A photograph cannot tell us what the piece weighs or how it sounds, and every report names what we could not check.

Upload your photos
Up to six photos, taken by you, of the piece itself. Renders, generated images, screenshots and catalogue crops are refused: we cannot tie them to an object. They stay on your case page and nowhere else. No account, and the first read costs nothing.
Add at least one photo. The plate under the seat matters most.
