The markers that decide it
- 01
shell material and edge
Early shells are fibreglass: the edge shows fine glass strands and a slight translucency at a raking light. Later authorised shells are polypropylene with a uniform matte skin and a moulded logo. A copy is usually thin ABS with a sharp moulded seam and a glossy face.

moulded marks
Genuine shells carry moulded or embossed text in the underside: maker name, and on Vitra pieces a logo with the designers' names. Look for a mould date stamp or a clock stamp. Printed stickers alone, or crisp laser text, point to a copy.

shock mounts
Original mounts are rubber bonded to the shell with a wide even glue footprint, often with a raised number. Copies bolt a steel plate straight through the shell or use small square pads.

base geometry
Eiffel and dowel bases have specific rod diameters and a cross-brace welded, not clamped. Wide, thick rods, visible weld blobs and clamped joints are reproduction tells.

screw type
Factory screws seat flush into the mount with a correct washer. Long self-tappers, mismatched heads or bright new zinc mean replacement or copy.

patina
A fibreglass shell of age yellows unevenly and shows fine scratches on the seat, and the rubber mounts harden and craze. Fresh rubber under an aged shell means remounting, which is normal restoration but must be declared.
