The markers that decide it
- 01
maker's stamp
Carl Hansen & Søn brands the frame, usually under the seat rail, with the maker name and often a Hans J. Wegner mark. The brand is burned or stamped into the wood, not printed. A paper label alone, or nothing, needs explaining.

paper cord weave
The seat is hand-woven paper cord, about 120 metres, in an envelope pattern with a taut, slightly domed surface and neat corner turns. Copies use thicker, shinier cord, a loose or machine-even weave, and messy corners.

top rail bend
One steam-bent piece forms the arm and back, with a scarf join hidden at the centre back and continuous grain around the curve. Copies show a laminated stack, a visible glue line, or short grain that runs off the curve.

Y splat
The Y is a single shaped piece, thin and lightly rounded, seated into mortises. A copy is thicker, flatter, or screwed on from behind.
- 05
joinery
Legs meet the seat frame with tight round mortises and no filler. Gaps, visible dowel ends, or screws through the frame are reproduction or repair.
- 06
patina
Oiled originals darken at the arms and the cord yellows on the seat front. Uniform new-looking cord under a dark frame means a reweave, which is common and should be declared.
