The markers that decide it

marble base
A single block of white Carrara marble with a broom-handle hole through it for two people to lift, chamfered edges, and grey veining that runs through the block. Reconstituted stone, no hole, or painted edges are copies.
- 02
maker's mark
Flos marks the base or the stem with the maker name, and newer lamps carry a printed label with a model code. The mark is small and often in a chamfer. No mark at all needs explaining.

telescopic stem
Brushed stainless arc in two telescoping sections with a smooth, firm adjustment and a specific arc radius. Copies use lighter tube, a loose slide, and a flatter arc.

shade and diffuser
Polished aluminium shade with a perforated ring and a glass or plastic diffuser at the socket, sitting square to the arc. A dull, thin shade or a missing diffuser is a flag.
- 05
patina
An old base shows chips at the corners and a warm tone in the marble; the stem shows fine polishing wear. Bright white uniform stone on a lamp sold as vintage is a flag.
